Welcome to St. John's of Otumoetai

Enjoy finding out...

about St.John’s of Otumoetai. We hope that you will find this site helpful and that it enables you to become part of the St.John’s family. Otumoetai is the suburb in Tauranga that looks directly north across the harbour to Mauao, or Mount Maunganui at the entrance to the harbour. The foreshore of Otumoetai is very tidal and hence the name which refers to the rise and fall of the tide.

St.John’s of Otumoetai is a very well-established feature in what is now an idyllic harbour side suburb. Established in 1966 as an independent Parish within the Waiapu Diocese of the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia, St.John’s has been the spiritual home of many and continues today to speak of the heart of the Christian tradition.

Our Mission Statement

(Shared with St.John’s Episcopalian Church, Edinburgh)
St. John’s, by the grace of the spirit, seeks to be an open community, walking in the way of Jesus, engaging with an ever changing world and living a faith that is timeless yet contemporary, thoughtful, loving and compassionate.

Search for a new Vicar

The resignation of our Vicar, the Rev’d Edward Prebble, on 1st July 2009 means that St John’s of Otumoetai is looking for a new Vicar. Edward and Sherrell are moving to Auckland where Edward will be doing a PhD at St John’s College, and will also be part-time Priest in Charge of the Selwyn Church, Mangere East.

A consultation process will be taking place over the next few months, as we look for someone who shares our commitment to community-facing ministry, and an open, inclusive theology. Any enquiries should be directed to the Bishop, the Rt Rev’d David Rice, P O Box 227 Napier. bishop@waiapu.com.
